Non-Material Alternatives

Alternatively, in lieu of buying us stuff, we would also invite you to consider supporting any of the causes that desperately need some attention globally at this juncture, including some that involve people who need things like clean drinking water or basic human rights more than we need fancy flatware:

  • Women’s reproductive rights, which are under assault by extremists across the country like Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Neil Gorsuch, who are intent on overturning the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. In tandem with activist legislatures and executives in red states across the country, this would effectively ban abortion, threatening the lives of women. In many jurisdicitons, it could also potentially ban abortifacient drugs, and, indeed, possibly any birth control whatsoever, even condoms (consider Planned Parenthood or New Voices for Reproductive Justice);
  • Voting rights, which are similarly being systematically restricted by a number of red state legislatures and executives who are trying to delay through whatever means necessary the inevitable demographic shift of their electorates becoming less white and less Republican (consider supporting the League of Women Voters, the Voting Rights Alliance, or the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund);
  • Transit organizing and justice, which is a crucial issue for economic, social, and physical mobility in places like Michigan, a state that invests more in corporate welfare for the automotive industry than it do in infrastructure. (Consider Detroit-based Motor City Freedom Riders, whose work Nat has covered extensively!)
  • Humanitarian relief for the ongoing crises in Yemen πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡ͺ and Ukraine πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ (Islamic Relief, Save The Children, CARE’s Ukraine Relief Fund, or Medecins Sans Frontieres).
